The Brandenburg Gate can look back on a 200 year history. It marked the border between East and West Berlin, today it stands for the reunification and thus one of the most popular tourist attractions in Germany.
On 22 December 1989, to the cheers of more than 100,000 people, the opening of the gate took place. The Quadriga was so badly damaged by the union parties, especially on New Year’s Eve 1989/90, that it had to be restored two years later.
Also the Brandenburg Gate was so strongly drawn by neglect and by environmental damage, that it needed a restoration. On 3 October 2002 the Brandenburg Gate was unveiled after nearly two years and has since then been a magnet for tourists from all over the world. At the Brandenburg Gate New Year’s Eve is traditionally celebrated the end of the year, with live music and fireworks over Berlin the New Year is welcomed.
Our Hotel Zarenhof Berlin Mitte is located close to the Brandenburger Gate (only 3 stations by underground).
